A former player, committee member and a friend to many at HRUFC!

John Plowright (1942 - 2024)

Harrogate Rugby club is sad to announce that former player and Committee member, John Plowright, has died. We send our deepest condolences to Brenda and family. John’s funeral will be at Stonefall Crematorium, Harrogate (time and date to follow). All will be welcome to gather afterwards at the Clubhouse, Rudding Lane.

John was born on the Wirral in January 1942 and as Sales Manager at Meade-King Robinson for 48 years, lived and worked in Wallasey and St Albans before finally settling in Harrogate in 1969.

John’s 3 passions in life were his family, his friends and Rugby.

John started playing for Oldershaw RUFC in 1957 (a club co-founded by his Father Eric in 1924) going on to captain the 1st XV between 1962 and 1966. Leaving the Wirral for St Albans in 1966 John played for Harpenden 1st XV and then on moving to Harrogate in 1969 joined Harrogate RUFC. John played for Harrogate 1st XV in the early ‘70’s, captained the Georgians in 1973-74 and served as a Committee member for several years in the 70’s John was a fiercely committed back row player on the pitch, totally immersed in social life off the pitch and an enthusiastic supporter up until his last attendance with Alan Everson in October this year.
